Pixel Amplifiers
A Pixel Amplifier is a device used to restore or strengthen a pixel data signal when the distance between a controller and the first pixel, or between sections of pixels, exceeds the reliable operating range of the controller.
Pixel amplifiers regenerate the digital data signal but do not increase the available power to the pixels. They are used to improve signal integrity, not to correct voltage drop.
Why Use a Pixel Amplifier?
The pixel data signal gradually degrades as cable length increases due to electrical noise, cable capacitance, and signal attenuation. If the signal becomes unreliable, pixels may exhibit symptoms such as:
- Flickering
- Incorrect colors
- Random flashing
- Intermittent operation
- Failure of all downstream pixels
A pixel amplifier restores the signal to proper voltage and timing, allowing additional cable length or more reliable operation.
Typical Applications
Pixel amplifiers are commonly used when:
- The controller is located a significant distance from the first pixel.
- Large props require long cable runs between pixel sections.
- Existing wiring cannot be shortened.
- Signal quality is affected by electrical interference.
What a Pixel Amplifier Does
A pixel amplifier receives the incoming pixel data stream, recreates a clean digital signal, and transmits the regenerated signal to the next section of pixels.
The amplifier does not modify the pixel data or increase the number of pixels supported by the controller.
What a Pixel Amplifier Does Not Do
Pixel amplifiers cannot correct problems caused by:
- Low supply voltage
- Voltage drop
- Insufficient power supplies
- Incorrect wiring
- Reversed polarity
- Missing common grounds
Those issues should be addressed through proper wiring and Power Injection where necessary.
Pixel Amplifiers vs. Differential Receivers
Although both devices improve signal reliability, they serve different purposes.

- Supply the amplifier with the correct operating voltage.
- Maintain a common ground between the controller, amplifier, and pixels.
- Protect outdoor installations from moisture.
Alternatives
Depending on the installation, other solutions may be more appropriate:
- Move the controller closer to the prop.
- Use a differential transmitter and receiver system.
- Install an additional controller.
- Reduce cable lengths.
- Use a pixel string as a "null pixel" to regenerate the data signal.
Best Practices
- Solve wiring and power issues before adding an amplifier.
- Use quality cables and connectors.
- Keep controller-to-pixel distances as short as practical.
- Verify that voltage drop is not the actual cause of the problem.
