Smart Pixels

Smart pixels are individually addressable RGB LED modules that contain both one or more LEDs and an integrated control circuit. Unlike traditional Christmas lights, each smart pixel can display a different color and brightness, allowing complex animations, images, and effects to be created.

Smart pixels have become the standard lighting technology used in modern animated Christmas displays.

Overview

Each smart pixel contains:

  • Red, green, and blue LEDs
  • An integrated driver IC
  • Data input
  • Data output
  • Power connections

The controller sends digital data through the pixel string. Each pixel reads its own data, displays the requested color, and passes the remaining data to the next pixel.

How Smart Pixels Work

Pixel controllers transmit a continuous stream of color data.

Each pixel:

  1. Receives the incoming data.
  2. Stores the first color values intended for itself.
  3. Passes the remaining data to the next pixel.

This process repeats until every pixel has received its own color information.

Common Pixel Types

Popular smart pixel families include:

  • WS2811
  • WS2812B
  • SK6812
  • GS8208
  • TM1814
  • UCS2904

Each has different electrical characteristics and features, but all operate in a similar manner.

Pixel Packages

Smart pixels are available in many physical styles, including:

  • Bullet pixels
  • Square pixels
  • Seed pixels
  • Pebble pixels
  • Strip lighting
  • Modules
  • Pixel nodes

Different package styles are selected based on the application rather than performance.

Voltage

The most common operating voltages are:

  • 5 Volts
  • 12 Volts

Each has advantages and disadvantages regarding wiring, power injection, and efficiency.

Wiring

Most smart pixels use three wires:

  • Power (+V)
  • Data
  • Ground

Some pixels include an additional backup data wire or other features.

Power Injection

As pixel counts increase, voltage drop becomes more significant.

Long strings may require:

  • Power injection
  • Larger wire sizes
  • Multiple power supplies

Proper power distribution is essential for reliable operation.

Pixel Density

Pixels are available in many spacings including:

  • 1 inch (25 mm)
  • 2 inch (50 mm)
  • 3 inch (75 mm)
  • 4 inch (100 mm)

The appropriate spacing depends on the viewing distance, prop size, and desired resolution.

Consider:

  • Voltage
  • Pixel spacing
  • Package style
  • Wire color
  • Wire gauge
  • Waterproof rating
  • Mounting method
  • Controller compatibility
  • Cost

Christmas Lighting Recommendations

For most hobbyists:

  • 5V pixels provide the best color consistency.
  • 12V pixels reduce power injection requirements on long runs.
  • Bullet pixels remain the most versatile choice.
  • Seed pixels are excellent for compact props and matrices.
  • Pebble pixels provide a low-profile appearance for many decorative applications.
