Power Supplies

A power supply converts household AC power into the low-voltage DC power required by pixel controllers, smart pixels, and other electronic devices used in animated Christmas displays.

Selecting the proper power supply is essential for reliable operation, proper brightness, and safe installation.

Figure 1 – Common power supplies used in DIY Christmas lighting.

Overview

Most Christmas lighting displays use one or more regulated DC power supplies.

Common applications include:

  • Smart pixels
  • ESP8266 and ESP32 controllers
  • Pixel controllers
  • Relay boards
  • DMX equipment
  • Other low-voltage electronics

Common Output Voltages

The most common output voltages are:

  • 5 Volts DC
  • 12 Volts DC
  • 24 Volts DC

The required voltage depends on the equipment being powered.

Never operate equipment at the wrong voltage.

Common Power Supply Types

Enclosed Switching Power Supplies

Often used in weather-resistant controller enclosures.

Advantages:

  • High current capacity
  • Adjustable output voltage
  • Good efficiency
  • Low cost

Waterproof Power Supplies

Designed for outdoor installations.

Advantages:

  • Weather resistant
  • Sealed construction
  • Suitable for exposed locations

Wall Adapters

Often used for:

  • Small props
  • Test benches
  • Development boards

Sizing a Power Supply

Power supplies should be sized to comfortably handle the expected load.

General recommendations:

  • Operate at no more than 80% of the rated output for continuous operation.
  • Allow additional capacity for future expansion.
  • Consider worst-case brightness when calculating current requirements.

Multiple Power Supplies

Large displays often require several power supplies.

When using multiple supplies:

  • Tie grounds together where required.
  • Do not connect positive outputs together unless specifically designed for parallel operation.
  • Fuse each output independently.
  • Keep power distribution organized and labeled.

Fusing

Every output should be protected by an appropriately sized fuse.

Fuses protect:

  • Wiring
  • Connectors
  • Equipment

A fuse should be sized to protect the wire, not just the connected device.

Cooling

Switching power supplies generate heat.

Provide:

  • Adequate ventilation
  • Proper mounting
  • Air circulation

Do not block ventilation openings.

Outdoor Installation

Outdoor power supplies should be protected from:

  • Rain
  • Standing water
  • Snow accumulation
  • Excessive heat

Many hobbyists install enclosed power supplies inside weather-resistant controller boxes.

Typical Christmas Lighting Uses

Power supplies commonly power:

Common Mistakes

Typical problems include:

  • Using the wrong output voltage
  • Overloading the supply
  • Insufficient wire size
  • No output fusing
  • Poor ventilation
  • Improper grounding
  • Undersized connectors

Best Practices

  • Leave safety margin.
  • Use quality power supplies.
  • Fuse every output.
  • Label voltage and current ratings.
  • Test supplies under load.
  • Verify output voltage before connecting equipment.
