ESP32-S Series

The ESP32-S Series is a family of higher-performance microcontrollers developed by Espressif Systems. While based on the success of the Original ESP32, the S Series introduces additional processing capabilities, native USB support, improved security features, and enhanced peripherals for more demanding embedded applications.

The ESP32-S Series is well suited for advanced DIY holiday lighting projects that benefit from native USB, increased processing capability, or expanded peripheral support.

Overview

The ESP32-S Series is based on Espressif's Xtensa architecture and currently includes several processor generations.

The family includes:

  • ESP32-S2
  • ESP32-S3
  • ESP32-S4 (Future)

Each generation builds upon the previous one by adding new hardware capabilities while maintaining the low-cost philosophy of the ESP32 family.

ESP32-S2

The ESP32-S2 introduced several major improvements over the Original ESP32, including native USB support, additional GPIO, and enhanced security features. Unlike the Original ESP32, the S2 uses a single-core processor and does not include Bluetooth.

Typical features include:

  • Single-core Xtensa LX7 processor
  • Up to 240 MHz
  • Native USB
  • Wi-Fi
  • Improved security
  • Increased GPIO
  • Lower power operation

ESP32-S3

The ESP32-S3 is currently the most widely used member of the S Series for DIY applications.

It adds:

  • Dual-core Xtensa LX7 processors
  • Native USB
  • Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)
  • Bluetooth Classic
  • AI vector instructions
  • Increased GPIO
  • Expanded peripheral support

The ESP32-S3 is becoming increasingly popular for advanced WLED and ESPixelStick applications due to its additional processing capability and excellent USB support.

ESP32-S4

The ESP32-S4 has been announced by Espressif but is not yet widely available.

As additional information becomes available, this section will be expanded.

Christmas Lighting Applications

The ESP32-S Series is well suited for:

  • Advanced WLED controllers
  • ESPixelStick controllers
  • Matrix displays
  • Multi-output pixel controllers
  • USB-connected devices
  • Large pixel installations

The ESP32-S3 is currently the most popular S Series processor for holiday lighting.

  • Better peripheral support

Limitations

Compared to the Original ESP32:

  • Slightly higher cost
  • Some firmware may not yet support every S Series processor
  • Board availability varies
