Light-O-Rama (LOR)

Light-O-Rama (LOR) is a commercial lighting control system used to create animated holiday and architectural lighting displays. It is one of the longest-established lighting ecosystems and supports both traditional AC lighting and smart pixel displays.

LOR products include controllers, networking hardware, sequencing software, and show players, allowing users to build complete lighting systems using hardware from a single manufacturer.

History

Light-O-Rama was introduced in the early 2000s and quickly became one of the most popular commercial lighting systems for animated Christmas displays.

Originally focused on controlling AC lighting, the product line has expanded to include smart pixel controllers, networking equipment, and show players.

Controller Types

The LOR product line includes controllers for a variety of applications.

AC Controllers

AC controllers switch or dim traditional lighting such as:

  • Incandescent light strings
  • LED light strings
  • Flood lights
  • Rope lights
  • Other AC-powered decorations

Pixel Controllers

Modern LOR controllers also support individually addressable smart pixels using industry-standard pixel protocols.

Communication

LOR controllers can communicate using several methods depending on the hardware model.

These may include:

Support varies by controller model and firmware version.

Software

LOR controllers are designed to work with the company's own sequencing software.

Many LOR controllers can also be configured for use with xLights, allowing users to create sequences using either software package.

Advantages

  • Complete commercial ecosystem
  • Well-established product line
  • Supports both AC lighting and smart pixels
  • Good documentation and technical support
  • Compatible with several industry-standard protocols

Considerations

Compared with many DIY solutions:

  • Hardware generally costs more.
  • Some features are specific to the LOR ecosystem.
  • Product capabilities vary by controller model.

Many hobbyists successfully combine LOR controllers with equipment from other manufacturers.

Typical Christmas Lighting Applications

Light-O-Rama controllers are commonly used for:

  • Residential animated displays
  • Commercial lighting installations
  • Municipal holiday displays
  • Traditional AC lighting
  • Smart pixel displays
